Department of Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (Master's Program)
Profile of candidates
Our society yearns for interdisciplinary talent well-versed in a wide range of fields extending from mathematical science, physics, and other basic sciences to applied engineering. The department helps students take initiatives in the creation and development of science and industry in the fields of mathematical science, physics, applied physics, as well as electrical, electronic, communication, information, and medical information engineering. In this manner, the department produces leading researchers and engineers who can creatively address challenges faced by the knowledge-based and information-driven society that is going through a radical change. Hence, the department seeks the following individuals.
School-wide candidate profile
- Aspires to build a foundation in the mathematical and information sciences, to acquire expertise, and to establish sound ethics as a future scientist or engineer.
- Engages in innovative efforts to strengthen and advance one's chosen industry.
- Pursues studies and conducts research in earnest to lead manufacturing on a global scale while giving due attention to the broader society beyond one's scope of specialization.
Department-wide candidate profile
- Has completed undergraduate-level studies to lay a foundation for specializing in mathematical science, physics, electrical engineering, electronics, communication engineering, information engineering, health information engineering, and applied physics; and aspires to lead manufacturing as defined broadly on a global scale as a highly professional engineer or researcher after completing the TED Program; or aspires to practically address the challenges faced by today's diverse, advanced industrial society as an engineer or researcher after completing the PED Program.
- Demonstrates and effectively applies undergraduate-level competency in the disciplines of mathematical science, physics, and chemistry; and aspires to lead the world as a highly professional engineer, researcher, or educator with expertise and a broad perspective of related fields.
Levels of knowledge and skills required for admission
Knowledge and skill levels required for admission to the master's programs at the department are defined at the school-wide, department-wide, and individual program levels.
Department-wide required levels of knowledge and skills
The following levels of knowledge and skills are expected of candidates admitted to master's programs, who then build upon them by taking courses in their fields of specialization.
TED Program: Master of Engineering degree
- Foundational academic skills and knowledge for pursuing further studies in electrical and computer engineering, information systems, and applied physics
- Thinking capability to acquire greater expertise and a broader perspective as an engineer or researcher, as well as the capacity to flexibly make balanced judgments to address future challenges as a global leader
PED Program: Master of Engineering degree
- Foundational academic skills and knowledge for pursuing further studies in electrical and computer engineering, information systems, and applied physics
- Thinking capability to pursue studies in manufacturing as defined broadly in order to serve as an engineer, researcher, or educator who can practically address the challenges faced by today's diverse, advanced industrial society
PSD and Science Degree Programs: Master of Science degree
- Undergraduate-level academic skills and knowledge for pursuing further studies in physics or mathematical science
- Thinking capability to acquire expertise and a broad perspective on related fields in order to serve as a highly professional engineer, researcher, or educator who can play an active role on a global scale
Basic policy for screening candidates
The department adopts a multifaceted, holistic approach to screening candidates to Master of Engineering degree programs. Candidates' interests, motivations, attitudes, knowledge, and skills are evaluated through academic subject examinations, interviews, and other procedures implemented at the school-wide, department-wide, and individual program levels.
TED Program: Master of Engineering degree
PED Program: Master of Engineering degree
PSD Program: Master of Science degree, and Science Program: Master of Science degree
General screening
- Academic subject examinations are administered to all candidates in order to check their foundational academic skills.
- Examinations on specialized subjects I and II are conducted to check candidates' levels of expertise.
- Application documents are reviewed, and interviews are conducted with candidates to comprehensively evaluate their proactiveness and attitudes towards collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Proficiency in English as a foreign language is examined based on TOEIC or TOEFL original score certificates.
- Special screenings through oral examination are conducted for candidates with outstanding achievements.
Special screening for government-sponsored international students
- Eligible candidates are international students on scholarship from the government of Japan or of a foreign government.
- Basic and overall proficiency in English as a foreign language is examined based on mandatory submission of TOEIC or TOEFL score certificates.
- Examinations on specialized subjects I and II are conducted to check candidates' levels of expertise.
- Oral examinations are conducted by inquiring about research activities candidates have conducted to examine their aptitudes for the intended programs.
Special screening for professionals
- Eligible candidates are invited to participate in interviews (among other topics, oral examinations on specialized courses, research achievements, and research plans).
Screening for the double-degree program conducted with the University of Padova
- Candidates are screened based on an eligibility review and interviews.
