Department of Chemistry and Life Science
Educational Philosophy
Master's Program
The department offers master's programs for aspiring engineers and researchers to search for truth in the natural sciences, specifically chemistry and life science; to create useful substances and materials; to devise production systems; and to unravel and tap into biological phenomena. This department consists of four specializations-– namely, Chemistry to study the world of materials from the atomic and molecular levels; Applied Chemistry for future engineers and researchers to tap into the potentials of materials; Chemistry Applications and Life Science for future engineers and researchers to apply their foundational knowledge of chemistry and life science and lead the advancement of chemical reaction processes and the development of advanced materials; and Energy and Sustainable Chemistry for developing new energy materials. In addition, the programs are unique in that they foster internationally minded, professional engineers and researchers with master's degrees in engineering or science who can play leading roles in their fields through interactive overseas internships and collaboration with international students from countries in Asia and elsewhere.
Doctoral Program
The department offers doctoral programs for aspiring engineers and researchers to search for truth in the natural sciences, specifically chemistry and life science; to create useful substances and materials; to devise production systems; and to unravel and tap into biological phenomena. The department consists of three specializations- namely, Chemistry to explore the physical world from both the atomic and molecular levels; Applied Chemistry for future engineers and researchers to develop technologies while fully leveraging leading-edge expertise in chemistry; and Chemistry Applications and Life Science for future engineers and researchers to apply foundational knowledge of these fields to provide advanced chemical reaction processes and materials.
In addition, the programs are unique in that they foster internationally minded, professional engineers and researchers with master's degrees in engineering or science who can play leading roles in their fields through interactive overseas internships and collaboration with international students from countries in Asia and elsewhere.
Educational Goals
Master's Program
Today's material civilization is built upon comprehensive and advanced science and technology for developing and applying functional materials based on creative natural science. The important keys for the sustainable development of such a civilization include the continuous exploration of superior substances and materials, the construction of good production systems, and the understanding and application of life phenomena. To achieve this, a comprehensive system must be built beyond the conventional academic framework of chemistry to incorporate mathematics and information science. This department focuses on chemistry and life science and produces internationally minded professionals who can respond to evolving science and technology with their basic competency and comprehensive skills to address a wide range of issues related to the pursuit of the truth of nature, manufacturing, energy, and life by applying principles and their knowledge.
Doctoral Program
Molecules and solid materials as aggregates of atoms, and organic materials as aggregates of molecules, exhibit very different functions depending on their electronic structures, types of atoms and molecules, and their arrangements. Therefore, the clarification of the interrelation between structures and exhibited functions is vital to material chemistry. The most crucial task for producing and using materials efficiently with minimum environmental load is to establish efficient production systems for new materials by effectively harnessing the chemical energy of materials and integrating a wide range of information. In order to tackle global issues such as food problems, life and medical care, it is essential to unravel and tap into biological phenomena. This department provides opportunities to develop molecules and materials that exhibit new functions, devise new processes for producing and using them, and unravel and tap into biological phenomena. In this manner, the department cultivates creative individuals who can identify challenges involving materials and life, and effectively address them with due consideration to the global environment.
